Christine,
     I'm not sure if you need Cox's software, unless you want their email 
service also. Example - when I moved in with my then girlfriend, she had 
Charter 
(with email). I ran a CAT5 cable from her router to my computer and I was 
online. I have CNN set as my homepage when I open I.E., you might set yours to 
earthlink.
