as soon as you set up TCP/IP, it asks you to use a log in name and password
on ME, and XP/ W2K/ NT4 automatically need you to log in to do anything with
the computer.

It does not matter what you login name etc is, as you are only working with
a workgroup, and not trying to use DOMAINS.

You do not need to set ay bindings, or IPX (this is NETWARE protocol). You
just need TCP/IP setup with the right IP numbers, and then it should work
fine.

When you try to log into the XP machine, it may well ask for user and
password. You need to enter administrator and what ever password you used
when the machine was set up. XP does not need the guest account to be active
for you to log in.

Also the me machine may only ask for a password when you try to log in.

Right I am off to my bed, as I ma feeling rather tired now. If you want or
need to email me, it will be fine ,as I am not out until after 9.30 in the
morning, so I shall try to sort out anything you need help with by email in
the morning for you.

Hope it works now,

Trevnal

Hi Trev,

I'm going to try all that you mention below. Also does any of the
following have any impact on this networking problem : bindings, IPX,
user names, logging on ? ?

Doug.

Okay lets start from the beginning here.

The machine with XP needs to get its IP number Automatically. This
will
then gets its number from the ME machine.

The ME machine needs an IP number of 196.168.0.1 with the subnet
mask of
  255.255.255.0

Both machines need to be on the same workgroup, but with different
names.

You need to restart the ME machine before the XP one.

As you have a firewall other than ZoneAlarm on the ME machine,
uninstall the
  firewall on the XP machine.

Once this is all done, you should be able to ping 127.0.0.1 on both
machines
in DOS. When you type in "ipconfig" in ODS on both machines the ME
one will
give you two Ethernet cards and two IP numbers, one of with is the
LAN card,
with the IP number 196.168.0.1, and the XP machine should show up
  196.168.0.x.

If this is not happening then we have a problem getting the two
machines to
  talk to each other still.

If both machines will not talk to each other, set XP machine to have
the IP
address 196.168.0.2, and then see if you can get them both to talk
to each
other. If they do not, we either have a problem with the cable,
network
cards not working right, or a firewall.

If that all works, and you have folders shared on each machine ,you
should
be able to find then, when you use the search for computer off the
right
  click on the Network Icon.
