where about on the Costa? Where my cousin lives, it is about 2 mins from the beach, tops!! Okay I see a problem or two here. The two machines should both have IP addresses starting 192.168.0.x . However I see that they both have different addresses, so they can not see each other to talk to other than by ping. You need to change the ME machine to 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0 This should then give the XP machine a new address as soon as you restart them both. Are you sure you are using a cross over cable? I am not sure what colours you will have there, but here when I make them it goes from left to right "White/Orange - Orange - White/Green - Blue - White/Blue - Green - White/brown - Brown" at one end, and at the other "White/Green - Green - White/Orange - Blue - White/Blue - Orange - White/brown - Brown" If both ends are the same colours, then the cable is the wrong type, and you need to change it, or use a hub or switch between them. Once you have done this try the ping tests again please, and ipconfig, and let me know how you are doing. So as present if I am right, we now have the ME machine with the internet connection, and the IP address set to 192.168.0.1 with the subnet mask 255.255.255.0. The XP one should have its IP address set to "Obtain An IP Address Automatically. ========= Correct ======= Can we ping 127.0.0.1 on both machines okay now? ======== Yep, did that on both pc's and no errors all packets received ======== Can we ping the IP address 192.168.0.1 from the XP machine? =========== tried that and all packets lost ================= Can we retrieve an IP address using "ipconfig" in command com on the XP machine ,and does it sow us as 192.168.0.x? ==================== When I did ipconfig on both pc's, the results were : I've done the pinging on both machines, do these results mean anything bad to you ? On the xp pro first : Ethernet adaptor local area connection : connection-specific dns suffix : ip address : 192.168.0.1 subnet mask : 255.255.255.0 defaualt gateway : Now onto win me : 0 ethernet adaptor : ip address : 80.32.3.44 subnet mask : 255.255.255.192 default gateway : 80.32.3.2 1 ethernet adaptor : ip address : 192.169.0.11 subnet mask : 255.255.255.0 default gateway : Both the network cards connect directly with each other, plus I've got an external usb adsl modem and I would prefer to share the internet if it's not going to be a hassle. ===================== Also do we have the same network name and different names for the computers also? ========= yep Let me know, so I can refresh my mind and see if we can get this sorted tonight for you. Trevnal I'll wait for your next post, after five days on this, I'm getting a bit peeved with it, ( I could have thought of stronger words, but this is a family group ! ) Doug.
