  Doug,

Do both machines have matching IP addresses? You need to set up the XP
machine with the IP number 192.168.0.1 and the ME machine to get its IP
address automatically. It will then get its IP off the XP machine when it
boots up, but the XP machine must already have been booted up.

Do I need to put anything into the subnet mask ? - Yes you need
255.255.255.0 XP does this for you as soon as you click in the Subnet
mask box

Next you need to make sure that both machines are part of the same
Workgroup. You can name this what ever you like, but both machines must
have different names.

  Done.

Both of these two steps will need the PC to be restarted.

Once you have that set up go to your XP machine and open IE. Now go to
TOOLS/INTERNET OPTIONS. Go to the CONNECTIONS, and down to SETTINGS. Now
click on PROPERTIES and then ADVANCED Here you need to tick the first THREE
boxes for sure, and possibly the fourth one.

Now I am going to struggle as a little as I have never used, but you may
either need a internet sharing CD to use or even the XP CD. I know on my
two XP machines, I just go to the second machine and open IE, and then go to
TOOLS/INTERNET OPTIONS. Go to the CONNECTIONS, and then this time click on
LAN SETTINGS. Then you just click on automatically detect settings. You
will need to de-select any ISP you have chosen on the connections screen
also.

Also you need to check what Firewall you are using if you are. ZONEALARM
DOES NOT WORK with internet connection sharing at all. So if you have it,
you will have to uninstall it completely and find a different one I am sorry
to say.

Hope this helps you out a fair bit. It is all so worth searching Yahoo or
Google for ICS, as you will find loads of information on it there, but I
never found the information about ZoneAlarm, it was my mate that reminded
me, as he had the same problem some time ago with it. Worse still he had
just brought it, and Zone Labs would not talk to him either.

Also make sure you have any folders etc shared that you want to on each
computer, so you can check they are at least talking and working peer to
peer as well.

  Good luck,

  Trevnal

I don't need the internet to be shared, only one pc will be using the
internet. - If that is the cae, and you only want one to connect to the
Net, you cna give the machine a static IP adress instead, which makes very
little difference to you. As long at it follows the 192.168.0.XXX then you
are fine.

Again with any firewall, make sure it allowss you LAn to go through. They
should all do this with a few settings etc. Depending on what oen you use,
it shoudl tell you how to do this.

  Doug.

I seem to be having a lot of problems with this :

I am trying to network 2 pc's, pc 2 has win me and pc 1 has xp pro,
I
have the correct cable and there's an ethernet based combo in pc 2
and
an onboard network card in pc 1, I've gone through the networking
wizard very carefully on both pc's, but yet I still can't see the
other pc's contents on either of the pc's ?

I have an external adsl usb modem.

Any ideas on how I can solve this please.

  Many thanks.

  Doug.
