MOST (if not all) CD-Rws are pre-formatted, so you don't need to format
them. However, if you are like me; you will choose for format them when you
start a new project, or just want to get off what you put on before
discarding the CD-Rw. I use four CD-Rws here repeatedly for application
development, when done I copy over to a CD-R, and reformat the CD-Rw. Does
that help?

While I may not always format them, I always change the VOLUME label to
something that identifies it as mine. It is amazing how often they get
mixed up in other CD-Rs, DVDs, etc.
