So in a few years, when the analog channels are shut off=20 there will be a great outcry when the realities of dealing=20 with the problems of OTA digital reception come to bear in=20 terms of large outdoor antennas just to get what was=20 previously available with rabbit ears. Will the broadcasters choose to switch back to their VHF frequencies and give up their UHF channels?=20 VHF transmitters require lots LESS power. Immagine installing an antenna to receive digital Channel 2=20 30 feet in the air above your house. Can this antenna be used to receive digital Channels 5 or 9 as well?=20 Are multipath reflections worse for 8VSB at 60 mHz than 600? How much of the 8VSB testing that has been done was done at VHF = frequencies? Will 8VSB replicate NTSC analog coverage at VHF frequencies? -----Original Message----- From: opendtv-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:opendtv-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of John Shutt Sent: Thursday, September 09, 2004 11:21 AM To: opendtv@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [opendtv] Re: FCC Eliminates Simulcast Rules Tom, The idea of the simulcast rule was to ensure that people could = comfortably switch to digital television without losing their current programming. Without a simulcast rule, the DTV channel can be treated as a second = channel with separate unique programming from the NTSC, and will make it harder politically to ever turn of NTSC. DTV can hardly be called a replacement for NTSC if it is not required to duplicate what is on NTSC. The period we are in can hardly be called a transition if you can't get the same thing in both places (analog and digital.) If the content is not identical, it is dual broadcasting, not = a transition. DTV has now become a premium service, not a replacement service.
