So the CE industry has responded to the mandate by adding the lowest cost ATSC IRD possible to their low & midrange sets, perhaps something a little better to their high-end sets, rather than removing NTSC tuners and selling tunerless monitors. But to the consumer who has no use for an antenna and maybe a dozen 'free' TV channels, the point is moot.
For example, Jeroen, who was not using OTA TV, went off and bought a DTT receiver on impulse. Over here, any cable and DBS subscriber buying a new TV set could even more easily give the DTT a try on impulse. With today's receivers, chances are very good that he'll be able to receive at least some local channels with the simplest of indoor antennas.
And they'll move on from there. Most people are not OpenDTV list members. They probably don't have any "I will petulantly not watch ATSC, no matter what" hard feelings.
