I presume this is a G4?! An empty battery will not slow down a computer!!!
It'll just cause the computer to "forget" its settings such as date, time,
mouse speed, keyboard response rate, start up disk, etc.

You should _never_ be waiting for a G3 or a G4 with respect to typing. If
you are, it means you're running some REALLY heavy duty back ground apps.

As for your free disk space -- 68.5 MB is _full_. Try to free up a few 100
MB (0.5 GB would be good). It might be worth investing in a CD-RW as a
back-up option to free up some disk space, or to have a second HD installed
(40 GB IDE ~ $120)

In your case, I would recommend upgrading to 9.2.2 (if you have enough time
on your hands). If you've got a cable modem it'll be quick and easy, but if
you're on 56K modem I would suggest that you find someone with a CD-burner
and Apple's updates and ask them to make you a disk with 9.1, 9.2.1 and
9.2.2 updates.

You'll have to update your 9.0.4 machine in this manner: (1) update to 9.1,
then (2) update to 9.2.1, and, then (3) update to 9.2.2. You have to go
through these three steps in order.

Two caveats: (1) do you run some software that is known to break under OS
9.1 or 9.2.2 (very few apps were broken by the update); and, (2) your
"Applications" folder will be renamed "Applications (OS 9)" and "Utilities"
will be moved into it. You can safely rename it back to Applications and
move your Utilities folder back to the main level (I'd just rename Utilities
to trick the installer into thinking the folder wasn't there and didn't need
moving).

As for your slow down -- it "may" be due to Sherlock's disk indexing. Open
up Sherlock II (command-F) and set the Indexing options. Either turn
indexing off for your disk(s) or schedule it to happen when you're not at
your computer (indexing creates an index of file contents -- allows for
faster content searching but makes for lots of used disk space if you have a
lot of files).

If the slowdown is not due to Sherlock I would suggest you have some other
strange software installed that's wreaking havoc with your machine.
