Ok, G4/400 OS 9.0.4, Word 98 (I hope... 6.0 is too old really for OS 9),
Quicken, and Netscrape.
Hmmm.
Problem #1: Netscrape (all versions). It _used_ to be a good app compared to
the competition but it has pretty much died out now. I exclusively use IE 5
and iCab. BTW The only app that has given me grief (with RAM) is Netscape
4.7x (I won't even mention what NS 6.1 did to my machine -- it involved
having to do a clean install of OS 9 (well, ok, I mentioned it)).
Problem #2: Word
If you're running Word 6.0 -- it's pretty old software and not properly
supported in OS 9 anymore (does it even run?).
If you're running Word 98, you should download apply the relevant patches
available at <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/download/default.asp>. Word 98 is
not entirely happy with anything past OS 8.5.
Problem #3: "it's been nothing but grief since I bought it"
Chances are there are a few things that will help this:
#1 re-install OS 9 and apply all the OS updates (9.0.4, 9.1, 9.2.1 and 9.2.2
in that order) [be sure to back-up your Preferences Folder before doing so
or you'll lose your Netscape bookmarks and mail (if you use it as a
mailer)].
#2 add some extra RAM. 128 MB is more than enough for Word, Netscrape and OS
9 but if you can give Netscape more it'll be happy (it is a very bad RAM
citizen and likes to consume lots of it if it can)
#3 make sure your HD is at least 200-300 MB free (preferably defrag it as
well)
#4 Make sure you're using Netscape 4.79 or (if you're a real masochist) 6.2
(slow, unstable and poor interface design but it'll do a better job with
some web sites than 4.79)
Radical suggestion -- upgrade to OS X 10.1.2!!! Everything that runs under 9
runs under Classic in X, and there are a lot of apps that are native to OS X
(and, thus protected from other apps crashing) -- Word X, Netscape 6.2
(SUCKS), IE 5.1, OmniWeb, Acrobat, etc.
You'd want to make sure that you had 2 GB free on your HD and upgrade to _at
least_ 256 MB RAM total. Your machine is supported by OS X and fast enough
to handle it nicely (my G3/450 does well and it's a touch slower in practice
than your G4/400 (plus, OS X is optimised for G4s).
