Hi Ray In the UK when I trained as a secretary many moons ago (don't ask!) there were several conventions. Business used 2 spaces, the civil service used 3. It was VERY bad form to use just one. Then "they" invented open punctuation and sent everything into a total spin! I note that MS Word doesn't like it if I inadvertently add a 3rd space, but having been trained for 2 that's what I always use! I think the convention for using one space started with the earliest electronic typewriters about 20-25 years ago, which couldn't cope when you used 2 spaces at the end of the sentence but wanted right-justified text. Hello All, What is the commonly accepted standard for the number of spaces between sentences in formal writing? I see that Word 2002 permits selecting "1 space", "2 spaces", or "Don't check" in the Tools menu | Options | Grammar and Spelling | Settings. I examined several sources like the Wall Street Journal, some Microsoft manuals, and some text books. In those publications that are right-justified, it's impossible to tell, however in left-justified text, the predominant style appears to be one space. Is there a standard?
