Hi Linda, James, and, Christine.

Great responses!  I like especially the references to the Chicago Manual of
Style and the piece on desktop publishing as well as the explanation for why
the two-space convention came into being.

I, too, am old enough to remember hot type  --  in fact, Gutenberg and I were
drikin' buddies for a time.

It is easy enough to set the option for one space in Word, but it will be
really hard for me to drop the second space in my writing from now on.
