[mso] Re: One or Two Spaces Between Sentences?

Personally, I don't believe it is the AGE that causes folks to continue to
do what they learned, but more their attitudes. Some people just refuse to
change...others learn to change with the times.

I learned to type on a manual typewriter in HS and spent YEARS typing away
on a Selectric...using 2 spaces. Then I moved to a PC and was fortunate to
be sent to a typography course by my boss when I started to learn graphic
design to do our company brochures and books...BECAUSE they wanted them to
look professional. I learned about 15 years ago to use one space, en/em
dashes, blah, blah.

It basically the difference between producing documentation that looks like
it was created by a professional who knows the rules of proper
typography...or producing documentation by someone who learned to type on a
typewriter and has never evolved as a professional. Don't mean to sound
elitist...it's just a fact.

Feel free to share my comments with your "stuck in the mud" bosses!<g>

And you might want to pass along this link which explains it nicely...

I too work in an organization that insists on two spaces.
However, the question is starting to be raised by some of
the newer employees. Of course the managers and supervisors
insist on it being two spaces, so I agree that age probably
has something to do with it and I think that it will change
over time, as the new folks move into management.

Here in the states, the organizations which dictate policy
for writing college and post graduate research papers and
theses, etc., (organizations like APA and MLA, etc.) all
require ONE space ... And when I wrote my book for Wiley,
they required one space too. Actually, writing the book is
where I FINALLY got used to one space. Up to that point, it
was something I had to keep reminding myself. Now it's just
habit.

Age is definitely a factor here. Those of us who used to use
typewriters have had to learn this. The younger generation
who have grown up with computers NEVER used two spaces to
begin with.

I've recently moved companies and discovered (by accident
yesterday) that we have an inhouse style guide which INSISTS
on two spaces still. I guess there is a divide between
business correspondence and desktop based work which will
always exist, plus a certain amount of transatlantic
variation!

<g> here also!
