Ya know, it's funny you should ask this. This is the 4th
time I've seen this question/comment in a month. It was
brought up where I work, should we use 1 or 2 spaces. Then,
within a week of that question, I saw two different
questions from two very different sources outside where I
work, asking basically the same thing, but a little more
specific, these two questions wanted to know how to convert
2 spaces to 1 space. Where I work, they are sticking with 2
spaces, but I think others are going to one.

I know, this really doesn't answer your question, I just
think it is very interesting that I've seen this particular
question 4 times now in one month, from 4 very different
sources.

Subject: [mso] One or Two Spaces Between Sentences?

Hello All,

What is the commonly accepted standard for the number of
spaces between sentences in formal writing? I see that Word
2002 permits selecting "1 space", "2 spaces", or "Don't
check" in the Tools menu | Options | Grammar and Spelling |
Settings.

I examined several sources like the Wall Street Journal,
some Microsoft manuals, and some text books. In those
publications that are right-justified, it's impossible to
tell, however in left-justified text, the predominant style
appears to be one space.

Is there a standard?

Ray Shapp
