ONE SPACE! Amateurs use two. PERIOD! A typewriter needed two, but a computer is proportional spacing and knows what a period is. Granted, if you are using a non-proportional font, such as courier, then two would help clarify the spacing. But for a professional document with proportional spacing on a computer...use ONE after all punctuation. Dian D. Hello All, What is the commonly accepted standard for the number of spaces between sentences in formal writing? I see that Word 2002 permits selecting "1 space", "2 spaces", or "Don't check" in the Tools menu | Options | Grammar and Spelling | Settings. I examined several sources like the Wall Street Journal, some Microsoft manuals, and some text books. In those publications that are right-justified, it's impossible to tell, however in left-justified text, the predominant style appears to be one space. Is there a standard?
