I found this link that claims it can recover - for a fee -  lost data from a 
pst file.
If they can't recover the data , you pay nothing.
Have no idea if it's true or how they can possibly do this, but if the
data is that important, it might be worth looking into, at least (unless 
someone knows already about this service and what it's about)

  Linda, there used to be a program simply called "Undelete" that got me out
  of a jam at one time.  Don't know if it's still around or if it will work
  with newer OS's.  I'll try a search for it later.
