You might also be in the trainer still. If you are no wonder your settings did
not get saved. You are not actually in the operating system itself. You need
to get through the trainer, then go to system prefs and change any settings
there. Also if you finished with the trainer and vo quit speaking hit control
option comand f8 and when you hear welcome back to the voice over trainer
simply hit escape. and you will be back to voice over.
The password field is part of the trainer and part of initial set up. if you
did not get past the initial set up, you are not also in teh operatin gsystem.

before you can still return it if necessary. It could be several things, but
my feeling it is all software. It could be during the indexing of spotlight
or some background process. I’d give it a little time and watch it closely.

This sounds like software and not a hardware issue. When VoiceOver cut
out, did you try toggling off and then back on VoiceOver?
