Phil's describing the system plus an occupational scheme, isn't he? If I'd 
known I'd be in Wales now and the waiting lists would be long (etc. etc.) I'd 
have taken out private health insurance under a university employee group 
scheme -- fuller coverage than my current cheap policy for less money, and, a 
discount if I wanted to keep the policy when I left the job.


The merit of our system is that the NHS covers everybody and any other 
treatment/insurance is private and (almost always) separate from NHS treatment 
and NHS premises; so there's a clear separation between NHS provision, paid for 
by taxes and NI contributions, and private provision, paid for separately and 
"privately". 

I'd prefer NHS-only, but the post-war Labour govt wimped out on that
