Fascinating.  While the two are not identical, what could 'headway' mean 
if it didn't also involve headcounts?

Middlebrow popularity is one thing, solid content another. That a whole 
bunch of people thought Jean-Paul Sartre was a great philosopher at one 
point, does not make it so.
