An AMD AthlonXP 1800+ with 512MB RAM,
ASUS A7V400-MX motherboard and
NVidia GeForce2/MX video card (64 MB RAM).
There's another Pentium III 450 MHz,
256MB RAM and i440BX motherboard with
onboard S3 Trio3d video card (apparently,
an IBM 300GL desktop) on which GNOME
literally crawls.
The problem is mostly with responsiveness if
the following set of applications are open in
the default GNOME desktop:
* mozilla/firefox/opera/epiphany
* beep-media-player/xmms
* xchat
* A couple of terminal windows with emacs
and/or zsh.
The above are being managed on 8 workspaces.
They work peacefully without a snag on
window-maker/enlightenment/openbox
(with ROX-Session).
My complaint is not against FC4, but rather against
GNOME itself. KDE is somewhat more responsive than
GNOME on my machines. It is usable on an old
Pentium II 266 MHz with 128MB RAM (Compaq
Deskpro 4000 i.e.) from a knoppix live CDROM.
However, changing the default gtk theme to something
lighter (ThinIce for instance) improves the speed
of GNOME, slightly.
See if the following command helps.
gconftool-2 --type bool --set/apps/metacity/general/reduced_resources
true
I'll try this out.
Use system-config-services or ntsysv to turn
off services/deamons you dont use.
I generally leave most services disabled (except
perhaps syslog, network, portmap, fam and a
few others).
FC4/RH is perhaps best suited for enterprise
servers/workstations (large memory+more CPU power),
where startup time and desktop responsiveness might
not matter the most.
For low resource constraints, there are alternatives.
