I don't know about FC3 being slow - in my experience, it was pretty fast
in overall desktop responsiveness with a few minor tweaks:
1) Turn off all unnecessary system services.
2) Install 256 MB of RAM, instead of the bare minimum 128 MB.
3) Get rid of udev, hal, etc. and downgrade to a static /dev tree.
4) Downgrade to XFree86-4.3.0. (not really necessary).
With these fixes, FC3 runs great on a P3/700 Dell Inspiron notebook
as well as a number of other systems I use. It is rock stable, and
definitely superior to any other RedHat distribution on overall
reliability, with the possible exception of RedHat 6.2/7.3.
I've just got FC4 yesterday, and I'll be trying it out shortly - but
it is reported
to be significantly faster for most C++ code - that includes stuff like Qt, KDE,
Mozilla, Firefox, etc.
