Sounds like we need GNOME chart now ;-). What system configuration is
this? See if the following command helps.
gconftool-2 --type bool --set /apps/metacity/general/reduced_resources true
Use system-config-services or ntsysv to turn off services/deamons you dont
use. Make sure you have the relevant updates
Been there, done that - the gains are only marginal as far as the
performance of the GNOME apps go. GNOME apps on Ubuntu are on an
average a lot snappier - mind you, I don't have any hard numbers;
