I spent part of the day birding along Lake Michigan, starting at Harrington
Beach SP and working north to Point Beach SF. Harrington Beach and Sheboygan
were excellent. The rest was very quiet---understated!
At Harrington Beach---end of D---4000-5000 Red-br. Mergansers streamed by
during the 1+ hour I watched. Also seen were single Common and Red-throated
Loon, single Red-necked, Western and Horned Grebe, a few Long-tailed Ducks,
first Common Goldeneye of the fall, a female Surf Scoter just off shore the
entire time, etc.
Kohler SP had a single Common Loon and 2 fly by White-winged Scoters plus
Red-br. Mergansers.
Sheboygan had the "usual" single Harlequin Duck, several Surf and Black
Scoters, a Glaucous Gull (out amongst the numerous Red-br. Mergansers on the
lake) and 1000+ fly by Red-br. Mergansers.
The remaining stops proved very quiet. They included Cleveland, Fischer Creek
CP, Manitowoc, Two Rivers and Point Beach SP. The latter did have 200+ Red-br.
Mergansers moving south, plus 200+ Long-tailed Ducks way out on the lake. The
only way one could see the latter was when they flew.
The strong southwest wind made it cold, but apparently nothing compared to the
next few days. Here comes winter.
