Ruthie,

A PMP certification will give you a "bump," but some industry sectors will ask
you for more than that and some won't.

In my experience, the only thing a PMP Cert (or graduate degree, or BA, or test
score) tells me is that you've spent some time studying and are somewhat
devoted to the subject. Having said that, I, for one, would not hire a PMP
certified candidate with little or no real PM experience over a non PMP cert
that has 20 years PM experience. In other words, it's pretty much like
everything else.

If you're really serious, consider grad school over PMP. A school (like NYU
SCPS Management & Systems, among many many others) with a PM focus might do
well for you in terms of giving you not only the PM lingo exposure, but also
the general business management stuff.

Of course, you can always find a bootleg copy of the PMBOK and just use the
lingo in that to pad your resume.

Dave.
