I agree with Steven, experience is primary. PMI is not necessary but it can be a good way to network and learn. You don't have to be a PMP - you can just join the organization and see how it goes. I manage the Breakfast Roundtable for the NYC chapter, and I can grant a few exceptions to the registration fee for non-members.
