we have repaired a lot of the Funai DVD/VCR units on full warranty and on parts warranty. Dont expect to see any off warranty, except maybe for cleanings, as the stores periodically dump them for less than $100. If your Hitachi is a Funai, there are several common problems. One is caused by cassettes with doors that stick or reel brakes that dont release. The loading motor brings the cassette in and down. Then the capstan motor takes over the tape threading operation. If the tape does not come out of the cassette easily the capstan motor stalls. The capstan motor driver IC, on the motor, overheats and burns out. The IC is not available so you have to replace the motor assembly. Inexpensive, at least from Funai, but you may have to do a lot of fine soldering to replace it, as they soldered lots of cables in rather than use connectors. The other problems are caused by noisy mode switches. It has to be replaced, not cleaned, or it will malfunction again after a short time. The confused micro runs the loading motor and capstan motor until one or both burn out. Again you are replacing the capstan motor, some of which contain the loading motor driver IC too, and maybe the loading motor, as well as the mode switch. The IC that was replaced before took care of your tuning problem. The A/C head had nothing to do with that but the servicer probably noticed a problem with it when checking it out.
