[TechAssist] Re: HDTV Projection & DLP

How many oscillations is a 3.579545 MHz crystal good for? But if a mirror
did go bad all that has to be replaced is a chip. Good quality motors can go
for 10 or 20 years without attention. Dust filters can automatically present
fresh filters periodically. Lamp systems can hold spares and automatically
change when needed. Plasma ages and burns, is fragile and heavy, and
consumes a lot of power, although the manufacturers claim that they are
improving, but they are probably close to the limit. LCDs go out in
projectors, probably from the heat or the heating and cooling, and then you
have to replace the whole engine because there is no provision for
convergence. I am not knowledgeable about LCOS, but I notice that some
manufacturers that were producing them have given up on it. The Japanese are
building a factory to make flat panel crts that have a semiconductor cathode
right behind the phosphor. Its an old technology that they appear to have
solved the problems with. They are still working on organic LED displays,
but they are made with a printing process on flexible substrates, so you
might be able to roll up an organic LED tv like a window shade.
