Howdy...

The solution of using the same brand drives may have been one person's
solution, but it is not a solution really. It is just what one person found
that worked because they did not know what to do to fix the problem.

In regards to the cable select function of the drive, there is a special
cable for using this function with hard drives. You simply put both drives
in CS, and the cable treats one as master, and the other as slave.

What is sounds like is that the paging file, named pagefile.sys, may not be
on the drive, and hence the slow operation, and the BSOD that you are
experiencing. Now how to recreate the paging file is something that you
will need to have Windows 2000 up, and running to complete.

You can find the method which to adjust the paging file size at:

The minimum size NEEDS to be set to the amount of RAM installed in the
system plus 12 MB. Thereby a computer with 256 MB RAM would have a minimum
virtual memory size of 268 MB. I would recommend in such a system that you
set the maximum virtual memory to 3x the amout of RAM installed on the
system.
