My e71 is not reading them when I write them. I have punctuation turned off and 
when the cursor arrives on it I hear what I can only describe as a click sound.

That's right, Carol. You can do them with or without the dashes. Actually if 
predictive text is turned on, pressing number 1 twice gives you the smiley 
face. If you press number 1 twice then cycle through the predictions with the 
star key the sad face is the second or third item on the list of predictions.
