OK, sorry ...

I need to backtrack.
I used to use it a lot in Version 3 and it worked, as it were, out of the box!
I have used it in Version 4 but just written in the key strokes and not really read the result. When I did, I too found that it didn't read the "smiley face" to me.
I am pretty sure that in Version 3 there was a dictionary (in Talks) that defined these smileys. There no longer seems to be this dictionary by default, so we possibly have to put them into the user dictionary ourselves in order that they will speak again.
Can anyone confirm this or work out what the problem is from what I'm saying.
Sorry, Eleanor, my head's all over the place this week and I wasn't too coherent when last I wrote because I should have explained that I hadn't really checked it all out in Version 4.
Anyway, now perhaps someone will help us both sort it, but I rather thank that we have to enter the :] (Smiley) into the User Dictionary. ...

had a suggestion about pressing the No 1 key on the
keypad if predictive text is turned on, that does not

I haven't used the E71, so don't know anything about it. But I can't imagine it being much different from any of 
those I have used.
Presumably you have punctuation set to none or some, in
which case, you should hear Talks say "smiley face".  As
for writing one in a message, then hearing it, press up
arrow and then down arrow to read the last few words you
have written, including "smiley face", or Talks and down
arrow to read the entire message you have written.  If
doing all this doesn't work, I'm stuffed! (smiley face).

Hi nobody has been able to answer my query, I do not have
talks say smily face when I write it in a text message on my e71. Like I said I just get some sort of 'click' sound. Strange that as when someone sends one to me, it says

That's right, Carol. You can do them with or without the
dashes. Actually if predictive text is turned on,
pressing number 1 twice gives you the smiley face. If you
press number 1 twice then cycle through the predictions
with the star key the sad face is the second or third
item on the list of predictions.
