Carol I have had to put it in the User dictionary and now it is fine and there when I write it.

OK, Jackie, this gets more weird!

I've switched punctuation to "None" and written my message and still nothing! Weird!

Hi Carol

Right, I have tried writing a smiley face with colon dash
right bracket using my work N82 which has the very latest
edition of Talks on there. And when I Talks and up
arrow, or move the arrow key up then down to read the
line again - whichever is your preference - it says
"smiley face", so it does definitely work. I have
punctuation set to none. Setting it to some, most or all
does not say "smiley face" and, to my knowledge, never
has.

I hope this clarifies for anyone wanting to try it.

Kind regards,

J

Hi Eleanor,

OK, sorry ...

I need to backtrack.

I used to use it a lot in Version 3 and it worked, as it
were, out of the box!

I have used it in Version 4 but just written in the key
strokes and not really read the result. When I did, I
too found that it didn't read the "smiley face" to me.

I am pretty sure that in Version 3 there was a dictionary
(in Talks) that defined these smileys. There no longer
seems to be this dictionary by default, so we possibly
have to put them into the user dictionary ourselves in
order that they will speak again.

Can anyone confirm this or work out what the problem is
from what I'm saying.

Sorry, Eleanor, my head's all over the place this week
and I wasn't too coherent when last I wrote because I
should have explained that I hadn't really checked it all
out in Version 4.

Anyway, now perhaps someone will help us both sort it,
but I rather thank that we have to enter the :] (Smiley)
into the User Dictionary. ...

Hope someone can help further, please.

It did not work Jackie, that is my problem. Also Amro
had a suggestion about pressing the No 1 key on the
keypad if predictive text is turned on, that does not
work for me either. I think Carol was going to try it.
How about it then Carol? ----- Original Message -----

Hi Eleanor

I haven't used the E71, so don't know anything about it.
But I can't imagine it being much different from any of
those I have used.
Presumably you have punctuation set to none or some, in
which case, you should hear Talks say "smiley face". As
for writing one in a message, then hearing it, press up
arrow and then down arrow to read the last few words you
have written, including "smiley face", or Talks and down
arrow to read the entire message you have written. If
doing all this doesn't work, I'm stuffed! (smiley face).

Hi nobody has been able to answer my query, I do not have
talks say smily face when I write it in a text message
on my e71. Like I said I just get some sort of 'click'
sound. Strange that as when someone sends one to me, it
says
smily face.

Ah! I must give that a go and not go the long way round!
That will get me to use them more!

That's right, Carol. You can do them with or without the
dashes. Actually if predictive text is turned on,
pressing number 1 twice gives you the smiley face. If
you press number 1 twice then cycle through the
predictions with the star key the sad face is the
second or third item on the list of predictions.

Jackie's given you them, Eleanor.

I thought the dash wasn't used but maybe you can do it
either way.
