True story, somewhat remotely related to the topic: Back in the olden days when HP made CRT displays, I worked in that group = at HP (still working at Agilent). I frequently presented seminars on CRT = displays to customers. I always took the business end of a CRT along as = a show-and-tell. This was about the time they started X-raying and = inspecting carry-on items at airports. (Everyone old enough to remember = when you could just walk out to the plane with no inspection whatsoever, = raise your hands).=20 When my briefcase went through the X-ray, the inspector asked to look = inside it. He asked me to remove the contents from a cardboard mailing = tube and asked me what it was. Without thinking I said "An electron = gun." Instantly, almost before the last words exited my mouth, 2 pairs = of giant hands gripped my arms, attached to a couple of guys who looked = like NFL linebackers. We went to the security office, where the guy in = charge said, "What's this?" I replied "It's part of a TV." He said, "Oh, = OK, why didn't you just say that in the first place?" =20 Art Porter Agilent Technologies =20 -----Original Message----- From: si-list-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:si-list-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] = On Behalf Of Ken Cantrell Sent: Monday, August 28, 2006 7:54 AM To: jeff.loyer@xxxxxxxxx; Signal Integrity Mailing List Subject: [SI-LIST] Re: What do you do? Sorry if this is a little off-task, but ABOUT the most perplexing problem I've had for a while is answering the question "So, what do you do?". I faced this again while buying a dirt bike in the panhandle of Idaho - not a place exactly full of E-mag expertise (though maybe a certain eastern Washingtoner might have relatives there?). After years of blank looks, I've never found a good answer. I mostly resort to "I design computers" or something like that. Does anyone have a good SHORT explanation of what a "Signal Integrity Engineer" does, for the general public, who think "fast busses" is an oxymoron? I recently heard of "Microwave Plumber" and am thinking that comes pretty close!
