This may be even further off topic, but I've had a similar problem in the past when interviewing college new grads for a position in an SI group. I've explained it as "we define the limits within which the digital designers can safely pretend things are actually digital" and that seemed to help them understand. Of course, that was in a mainframe computer company and it won't work as well in an instrumentation company where there's significant analog content as well.
