[ SHOWGSD-L ] temperament

I really think this should be left up to the judge. Some judges will forgive
more on an inexperienced puppy. Some judges corrently assess that the dog does
not have a temperament problem, but instead doesn't want its teeth examined.
I'm willing to leave that determination to the judge who is in the ring with
the dog.
IMO, Rita Sandell does the temperament test flawlessly and has the good sense as
a breeder to tell the difference between an animal that has a temperament
problem and an animal that doesn't, for example, want to show teeth. If all
judges conducted the test like she does, we wouldn't need this discussion.
One of my pet peeves on this temperament test is the judges who combine the test
with checking teeth. We have smart dogs that quickly learn the association and
sometimes a "duck" to avoid having a mouth examined looks like poor
temperament. Our young puppies often have mouths that are still sore from
teething so they will try to avoid having their bite examined. It only takes a
time or two for our very smart breed to develop an association between someone
reaching for their head and having their mouths cranked open. Just another
reason not to conduct this test on puppies...
