Again Theresa, not sure where you are getting the facts to make such a
claim.
I do feel, that in the last 10 years or so, there has been some movement
on the openess of what we(the fancy) are losing our dogs too. And yes, I
think a few more notorious dogs have perhaps died young. But that does
not mean it is a breed-wide indicator. If you examine the pedigrees of
some of those dogs, you can make some educated breeding decisions.
In the meantime, I still highly recommend selecting 6-8 year old stud
dogs that have produced enough of a track record if you are concerned
about longevity. I would say older, but then you risk reproductive
concerns. If you want to go young(eg. the next best thing), well I sure
hope the first three generations are all still alive(and not tacked or
altered) and has not produced a high mortality rate for younger animals.
We still see many dogs hitting 12+, and I still feel the sweet spot
right now is around 12(at least near here). In thirty plus years of
breeding, we have lost roughly four at around two years of age, we've
had many more than that number exceed 14, and the majority at about 12
3/4 and the average life span in the 11-13 range.
The average age of wolves is 6-8, I still think that its a little
incredulous that we think we can alter some of the underlying phenomena
that is part and parcel of the german shepherd.
Lets be realistic, watch and learn, make reasonable educated decisions,
keep fastidious notes of your decisions and the results.
