Well, are you asking us as show people, or are you asking as to what a pet
person would consider reasonable? I personally think $800-1200 (Even up to
$1500) is fair, and unless you had to go to huge lengths (had to use
frozen/fresh
chilled and did an AI, had to ship your bitch, do a c-section, etc), anything
else seems a bit outrageous.
Strauss cost me very very little, though he is worth a lot to me. I'm
willing to pay a bit more for a good quality dog, but my limit stops at $2000.
I
love dogs...but I could by a used car for what some breeders charge, and I
don't
have a ton of money!! I can pay for my dogs' food, and their entry fees to
shows, and their vet bills and medications if needed, but I am not a rich
person. And even when I do purchase another dog, if it's going to cost that
much...chances are I'll have to work something out with the breeder, because
more
than likely I will not be able to afford to pay such a large sum all at once.
To Average Joe who just wants a pet, doesn't plan on competing, etc etc, they
don't want to pay that much. They can find parents who are OFA H/E and buy a
puppy for $500, rather than going to somebody who has a GV Sel Ex
Am/Can/Nat'l Ch and purchase a puppy for $2000+. While more and more people
are getting
educated, they still balk at the idea of a dog that costs a grand or more.
Rare breeds I get it....but charging so much for breeds that aren't hard to
find, like the GSD, Golden, and Labrador? It can be overwhelming.
