[ SHOWGSD-L ] prices of dogs

This brings to question, what is a "reasonable" price for a dog? What is
"reasonable" to me may be ridiculously cheap to someone else or maybe even
expensive to another person. When I was looking for my first German Shepherd
back in 1987, a well known breeder quoted me $1200 for a puppy who had yet to
be born. I was *appalled* at the price, it seemed WAY over the top. Now, I
would consider $1200 for a puppy from lines that I like to be CHEAP.
So, what is "reasonable"?

As for Kathy's post below - selling puppies without show contracts or without
replacement options etc is fine.. but those breeders shouldn't then expect to
sell those puppies for thousands of dollars either, but should be selling them
at pet prices. If they turn into super stars, oh well..
It is those egomaniacs that believe every puppy they produce is a "star",
presents them as such, charges an arm, leg and cost of your first born and then
says "oh, well that's the dog game" when they fall apart - literally and
figuratively - that drive people to other hobbies, other sports and away from
dogs..
