Jim, I don't know what dogs you have in your part of the country, but all I have to do is look in our yard, home and kennel and see the long correct sweeping gaits that Liz refers to. It is alive and well here. It is what we breed for, it is what we demand. . Now the RACING that goes on in some shows, which was totally out of control at the Nationals in ALL classes...that is ridiculous. GSDs don't work at warp speed, but so many judges allow them to be shown this way. It gives the illusion that the quick footed dogs are correct, because going fast covers a world of faults of gait.
