My Question:? How did this racing thing start?? I remember before ever showing
GSD's, watching them in the ring and being so impressed by their flowing
movement.? I knew nothing about the breed but they looked so elegant and
stealth.? I got into herding and obedience with my GSD's before showing.? I
loved to watch?my dogs move, especially in herding.? But, what I see in the
ring now, is racing, like Greyhounds.? What I see my dogs doing in the yard or
in the herding arena isn't even close to what I see in the ring.? That easy,
fee, suspended movement doesn't seem to be displayed anymore.? I know it's
there.? But, why the change?? Why is fast and pulling more appealing to the
crowd than a beautiful moving dog?? Is that a specialty thing?? Jimmy doesn't
seem to have a problem with easy moving dogs at Westminster.? Inquiring minds
want to know.
Laura Thomas?

Kathy, I'm not trying to say that contemporary movement doesn't have
long striding dogs. I am not saying that there are not good movers
anymore or they don't meet the Standard. I am not trying to say one
is better than the other. I believe that the easy striding dog with
catlike movement that I have seen in my forty five plus years in the
breed is a thing of the past. One only has to see videos of previous
Nationals that precipitated Liz's original statement to see what I am
trying to say. I don't like "racing" either. I do believe that
contemporary dogs are better built for moving at high speed and it
just human nature for a handler to take advantage of that fact and it
does excite the crowd. Jim
