I've been reading this thread and had to comment. This is a bit long, so if
not interested, don't read.
2 years ago I had the nicest guy call me wanting to purchase a male GSD puppy.
I did not have any puppies at that time, but referred him to another breeder
that did. At the time, he was wanting to spend somewhere between $400-$600.
He had TONS of questions, good questions, and needed a very very sound dog, due
to his side business, an Apple Orchard. So he needed a dog that would be
extremely social with people and kids of all ages, he has several thousand
people come visit his place during his 2 month "apple & peach" season. Make a
long story short, we had several wonderful phone conversations, and then I did
not hear from him anymore.
6 months or so later, good friends of mine run into this gentlemen at
McDonalds. They are wearing their GSD attire and he walks over and starts
talking to them. He is asking about the GSD club and can he join even if he
does not have a GSD, but a Shiloh Shepherd. They tell him of course, and tell
me this story a few days later. It is the same person, I still have his email
so I contact him. He was in the process of purchasing a Shilo from a breeder
in the State of Washington, to the tune of $1,300 plus the travel expenses to
get the puppy. After some research on my part, I came to the conclusion that
they are EXPERT marketers. His dog is beautiful, his pedigree is nothing but
oversized GSD's that have been named something different. We have talked a
lot, he did join our club and I really like his dog. I don't care that they
call him a Shiloh, in my eyes, he is a big sable longcoated GSD. They do not
do OFA, they do Penn hip. The
contracts are VERY stringent, even pet owners agree to x-ray the dog at their
expense and forward the info to the breeder. That is NOT a bad idea, I wish I
could get all my pet people to do that, some have, some don't. Anyway, I do
not dislike the Shiloh's in general, to me, they are an oversized GSD, most are
longcoated, and if they do belong to the true Shiloh breeder group, they do
tons of health clearances with their dogs. They ask astronomical amounts of
money for their pups, and they get it. Marketing, Marketing, Marketing. Not a
crime in this country and I really don't get on the bandwagon in hating them.
I say, to each his own. The King Shepherd is nothing but another oversized GSD
with a new name.
As far as other breeds in the Shiloh, I don't believe that, I think that is a
myth. When looking at the pedigrees, which I did, they all go back to large
GSD's. Anyone can breed a large GSD, there is a breeder down south that
advertises "large old style GSD's". Same thing, oversized dogs with more level
backs and less angles. Again, to each his own.
As far as the Shiloh in our club, he is a great dog with great owners and I
value them as quality club members.

That's interesting. I wonder if they did a thorough investigation into the
health backgrounds of the German dogs they bred to. I am not casting
aspersions
here, just curious.

The King Shepherd came about when some disgruntled Shiloh Shepherd folks left
Tina's group. They were unhappy with the health issues cropping up in the
Shiloh. They took their Shiloh's and bred them with German GSDs, to bring in
new blood.

I saw something the owners called a King Shepherd at a herding event last
year.
The dog was a coat and was gigantic! They were also very proud of their "rare"
og. It looked like the Shiloh pictures I have seen, only the dog was bigger
han a malamute!

About 4 or 5 years ago -- the first night of handling classes -- there
as a woman there with her young Shiloh shepherd. She told me she paid 3
rand for the dog, no breeding rights and she was very proud of her dog.
