As I understand it .....she crossed the German Shepherd Dog with Malemute to get the size, bone, coat, and color and markings that you recognize in the Shiloh Shepherd. She makes no claims that they are the German Shepherd Dog......they are not.....and I believe she has her own registry.......<G> Carolyn marhaven@xxxxxxx www.marhaven.com ----- Original Message ----- From: ParavelGS@xxxxxxxxxxx To: showlist Sent: Wednesday, March 21, 2007 2:55 PMSubject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] Shiloh Shepherds Pagairs wrote: If he is a Shiloh Shepherd are they still registered with AKC as German Shepherds? Dont think so.. I went to the website and from what I understand they are registered with a corporation know as the International Shiloh Shepherd Registry, Inc. They may be a German Shepherd "type", but if not registered with AKC they are not a "real" German Shepherd. Sorry for feeling this way, but I was at the vet once and this lady told me that her dog was a Shiloh Shepherd and that she would NEVER own a German Shepherd...True story... I just bit my tongue real hard and didnt say a word.(till it bled) Heard all the virtures of the Shiloh and why not to buy a German Shepherd. So according to the Shiloh owners their dogs are not German Shepherds...so why should we consider them as German Shepherds? Patty Szymczak" I had the same sort of thing happen this weekend, the clerk at the pet food store where I shop was talking about her dog and told me he was a shiloh shepherd, and that she decided on them because of all the hip problems with the "sloped" german shepherds. But then it turned out that he is also dysplastic! She explained some of the things with the breed, that it has splintered into a couple of groups. I responed to her misinformation about my shepherds, that they were show lines and that I've had very little dysplasia. I asked her if hip health was strictly a matter of "squareness and straightness of stifle" then why was there dysplasia with St Bernards, Labs, bulldogs and many others. She basically ignored that and kept on talking. She loves her dog and that is fine, I'm not out to change her mind. She wasent against GSD's but loved the long hair. I told her I had a coated bitch and she told me she thought that was a horrible no no amongst breeders, and she said she e ven ha d breeders tell her that they destroy long coats. Don't know who these "breeders" are, but I can't imagine any serious breeder doing something like that. She made it sound like it was a disgrace amongst us breeders. Interesting.
