DJX, I have the code meter service set to manual in administrator services, and I just booted up the XP computer, then looked at Task Manager, without starting Reason, and both code meter.exe and code meter cc.exe were shown in processes. I stopped them both and exited task manager, then reopened task manager to be sure they didn't re appear, and they were still not there. I then opened Reason, played with Doctor Rex a few seconds, then exited, and in task manager code meter.exte was showing, but not code meter cc.exe. Also, code meter.exe was only using less than 2,000k, while code meter.exe and code meter cc.exe usually show over 4000k each being used.

I waited several minutes and code meter.exe still showed in task manager, but CPU usage had crept up to about 2,400k, isn't that strange?

When I shut down the computer I heard one of those Wineyes ghost text saying: Event Viewer, Runtime Code meter.exe, and I can't guess what that means, unless it's from whatever runtime it is that starts code meter.exe.

So, obviously Reason is starting code meter, and obviously, Reason isn't stopping it after Reason is exited.

I don't know yet if that's a bad thing, but if I can get Windows XP 32 clean installed over Windows 7 64 bit on my new computer, I won't put Reason on a drive with anything else, except Reaper, N V D A and WindowEyes. I'm not believing Code meter is malicious yet, just want to make sure it isn't.

Hey try this, set the service to manual, check in msc to be sure it's off
(Stopped), then start reaston. When reason starts, it should start the
services (started). Then close reason, and check if code meter is on or off
(started or stopped). Give it a few secs after shutting reason off.

great the pcr works now; I guess usb is faster than the standard midi cable
trnasfer.

when Reason runs , it starts the CodeMeter service since it's set to manual
thus to start when required.
this is the best compromise for the time being.
cheers

Hey, you guys, I detest these watch dog spoiler programs as much as
you do; that's why I enjoyed defeating it so much!

Roy, I was running Reason 6 with no Code meter, but I was in demo mode.
Tomorrow I'll stick the ignition key in and see if it's recognized
without Code Meter running.
Maybe that's its purpose, to snoop on the legitimacy of the license.
Of course, as I think I said, who cares anyway, if any of us can't
afford the license, we can still get at those great Reason 6 sounds by
reWire.
Tomorrow, I'll go back to Administrator services and stop Code Meter,
then try the ignition key, just for curiousity.
By the way, Roy, I got my Edirol USB driver re installed and got
Windows Add hardware pointed to it, and Reason auto recognized and
configured my Edirol PCR-300 within a few seconds.
It plays Reason way better on USB than it did on midi cables.

A simple serial and registration.

That's enough.

and funnily enough, cakewalk experiences a lot less piracy than many

Hmmmm, wonder why?

could it be that people respect and like a company that doesn't make
it hard for them to use their stuff and would rather buy the stuff?

Just a thought.

I think the hacker community thrives and is challenged by these
heavgy handed schemes, it's like a big game, and if you don't give
them a challenge, they don't care and leave you alone.

I still think it's possible to be a software developer and not have
to be so heavy handed in typing your stuff down that the system gets
all messed up-.

And haven't they figured out by now, that copy protection doesn't work?

A simple key branded with your name and your id will stop most casual

Ah well, such is life 'grin'.

Letting it startup when reason does is not the problem, you have to
check if the service shuts off and stops running after you close
reason. Also, while reason is running it'll still mess things up;
that's where my real problem is, that the protection stuff slows
down the app it's made to protect and sometimes other running
processes as well. Now, to make this clear, I did notice some weird
behaviour that wasn't there before installing reason, which is when
I went looking and found code meeter running on my services. I then
looked in controll panel and start menu and everywhere else and
found no reference to it, neither was there an option to remove it;
keep in mind that this was after I had removed Reason and all
references to Propellerhead stuff. This is where my problem is,
this is what we consider "malware behaviour." This is what got Sony
in trouble a few years ago with their CD protection scheme and the
small software piece it installed on systems when a disc containing
this system was played. People didn't know it was being installed,
and neither could they remove it (that part being the worst).
I'm not saying code meeter is necessarily bad for you, though it
seems that most people who've tried have experienced some issues,
but I'm saying that I personally don't like any apps that use these
weird protection schemes or programs that interfear with my system
in a "malware-like" way.

Hey Chris and DJX, Roy says, I've removed the CodeMeter program
from the startup group , and changed its services to start manually
, not automatically , so it doesn't automatically load everytime
the system boots.Unquote.

I've got to learn to try more of these experiments, and not just
sit back and let myself be victimized by software.
What's the worse that could have happened, if that wasn't
successful, Reason might crash after bootup, like I seem to
remember happening to Hypersonic 2 if its SynchroSoft isn't
present.
Wow, this could make a real difference to me, not to have little
odd behaveors while Code Meter is running.
I'll remove Code Meter from the Win7 64 machine's startup first,
maybe it'll return to its original quickness.
I still want Reason 6 on a drive by itself, though, just in case.
