[raspberry-vi] Re: I see the future: How Linux will power the future of Braille, will it open it up to be more accessible if it embeds itself in our AT?

At the risk of repeating myself, I have some comments to make on this thread.
The bottom line is that the RasPi isn't well optimized for use as a portable
computer. Because the RasPi has no power management hardware, it can't support
a sleep mode. So, no "instant on" capability unless you're willing to carry
around a lot of batteries. Also, by the time you add a keyboard and a power
bank, you're carrying around quite a bit of hardware. Not everyone will want
to do this...
So, my focus has been on repurposing old Android cell phones. They already
have the hardware to do a sleep mode and have a touch screen that can support
Braille input. And, because there are billions of them that can't run the
latest Android versions, their prices can be remarkably low.
That said, there are a couple of gating issues. One is that Android isn't
really Linux, so installing (say) Arch or Debian packages is a non-starter.
I'd love to hear that someone is working on this issue, but ... crickets ...
Alternatively, there are several projects (e.g., /e/, Mobian, pmOS) that are
working on porting Linux to Android cell phones. Problem is, none of them have
much of an a11y focus and in any event, it's still early days for all of these
releases. Finally, I don't know of any touch screen input software for Linux.
I have ideas about how to write some, but haven't had the time to make any
progress on this.

Nah, just get a pi case, slap on a battery pack, and off you go. Nothing
to it.
Of course, the devil is in the details. Finding a raspberry pi case you
like, hunting up a battery pack that fits your particular usage case,
and getting it all setup to do what you want will take some time, but
for less than $100, you can have a fully portable full-blown linux box
in your pocket that can do just about anything you can think of for it
to do. ...
