Hi Amie,

PCM stands for Pulse Code Modulation. It refers to the way that sound is converted from analogue to digital form, and as Jamie said, when the Plextalk range uses PCM it results in a standard Windows WAV file. This doesn't use data compression as MP3 does, so gives better quality at the expense of much larger file sizes.

Best,

Peter

What is pcm? There are two recording choices that have this, and four mp3
choices. Is pcm another file format? A bit confused, and thanks for your
clear explanations; they help!

I decided to go ahead and get a Plextalk Pocket. What is the difference
between mp3 and daisy? I thought the ptr1 recorded in both. I'm a bit
confused between the two. Sharon

Hey Sharon: Put the "noise" level to low. I contend that the actual
MP3 recordings are really Windows files which is to say, that, your
player will need to be capable of playing Windows files as well as MP3.
Also, put your recording setting to "custom". Turn your incrament
setting to "off" or "none. When you stop recording, it will leave a
track mark. If that one is set to anything else, it will automatically
put a section in almost any time there is a "pause". They did a few
rather strange things with the PTR1 units. I use one myself. Get
regular CDR for MP# recording. You can't do MP3 recording on a "music"
CD. Some kind of "copyright" garbage. Hoe these things will help. If,
at some point, you might want to actually talk, contact me. John
