Thank you, Hugh and Clint and Vern (I'm sure other GeoCities patrons are
facing the same problem) ... First things first; you guys know tons upon
tons more than I'll ever know about computer matters. But when it comes to
language usage and matters of grammar, there I'll take exception. I know all
about its and it's.
It's it's when it's "it is" and it's its when it's a possessive pronoun
(like my, your, his, her, and our). Technically "its" is an adjective
modifying something about "it" (not knowing the gender, "the Martian is
scratching its tush" where "its" modifies the Martian's tush, and whatever
modifies a noun is an adjective). Though I never heard the term used, it
might be called a possessive adjective. And that's it and that's all. Now
regarding that's, that's another matter.
Not sure if you guys are old enough but parsing a sentence used to be an
important part of public schooling, days we'll never see again. Btw, I did
correct the itsy bitsy typo, like it going to matter if I lose the entire
website.
Confession, confession (and I recently told GeoCities only because they'll
be ending their webspace provider service (and it was free), and my
conscience feels a little better now ... when I ran out of space on
"buddychai" (which was 15 MB), I registered for "buddychai2" and then
"buddychai3". I'm just wondering if doing that ad infinitum, one can
eventually consume the entire world wide web.
Possibly GC always knew I was doing this but quietly allowed it seeing that
the site did get some traffic which often these personal sites don't get.
Confessing this to GC doesn't make me a better person; if there were
(subjunctive case) no pending ending of their providership, would I have
told them? :-)
I know it is off the subject but I must tell the "ethical question" story.
Two partners are in the tailor shop business and people bring their suits in
to be cleaned and pressed etc. Someone brings in a jacket, leaves if for
cleaning, he leaves, and one of the partners (the other partner is out for
lunch) finds a sizable amount of money in one of the pockets. He's thinking
of what is the ethnical thing to do and he asks himself. "Now the ethical
question is, should I tell my partner?".
Regarding your suggestions on transferring a website, it will take me time
to read and understand them (and hopefully apply); I'm slow with these
technologies. Vern even suggests downloading a new browser, BackStreet
Browser, which claims to be a website downloader. Worst scenario is that I
might just say bye-bye website; it was fun while it lasted. --- Harold
