You can actually setup SQL Developer to startup with only the 
preferences AND connections you want.
So you could have different desktop shortcuts setup per client, with a 
call to sqldev as
sqldeveloper -Dide.home=/path/to/A  ...

That way if you're at AT&T you don't get any funny looks when someone's 
over your shoulder and notices you have a connection called 'Verizon'

I could write that up in a blog post if that would help.
