I'm not disagreeing with you that Oracle software on Windows fits about
as
nicely as a 3-legged pink elephant in the front row at a funeral.

The point I'm making is that a 100% windows shop likely has a better
chance of success with Oracle on Win than Oracle on Lin.

Your example of "a number of sites" that gave up on RAC on Windows
may in fact be a testament to the poor fit of RAC on windows and not
Windows. Indeed, Windows is really wierd with raw partitions..and OCFS
on windows is OCFS--on windows. A CFS that is fully supported by
Microsoft
that supports direct/async IO, dynamic online growth, mountpoint (no
"letter" drive limit),
shared Oracle Home (a choice) and other such features might make the
"fit" for
RAC on windows a LOT better, wouldn't you think?

The rats-nest of the registry and the fact that it is all but impossible
to uninstall RAC from
Windows is an entirely different story.

The outfit that I work for has done both many times. RAC on
Winders is always a nightmare both during setup and then operationally.
I'm familiar with a number of sites that have tried and given up on
RAC/Windows. It's just too unmanageable, too unstable, too costly in
terms of time. Any flavor *ix is better. Personally I don't really like
RAC on Linux, but that wasn't part of the question.

and all the people that run it on windows successfully
are just kidding themselves?

Dissimilar operating systems not allowed. Must

If Linux is available as a choice, make both
nodes Linux, you will be much happier, even if it's a completely MS
shop!
