The way it's being done, vielleicht. But most of what one reads says that the 
eye's response to luminance, even after adjusting to a certain nominal level, 
is close to logarithmic. And yet the analysis on why you need so many bits 
always assumes linear scaling of bits to nits.

It's why that LogLuv scale is no parsimonious wrt bits. I would expect that a 
log scaling could also save bits in RGB. Anyay, it is what it is, as they say.
