I suppose it's a bit like upconverting SD to HD. You have to guess at the
missing information you're adding into the image.
Or colorizing an old B&W movie...
Spatial resolution upconversions are difficult for several reasons. Obviously
missing information is a problem, but the spatial/temporal conversions needed
to upconvert interlaced source add to the problem, and this impacts the color
detail available as well.
When mapping a "limited color gamut" into a larger color gamut, every possible
color already exists in the larger color space; you can just live with the fact
that you still have limited color, OR you can try to color correct into the
larger color space.
