Sling offers some, other content owners offer some more, and (you continue to 
miss) people frequently ARE replacing the rest with viable (to them) 
alternatives.

Some people, yes. Most, not so much.

Netflix is an alternative for HBO, for many people, as an example.

What has HBO got to do with it?

It is available OTT or via the MVPD systems, and is not part of the extended 
basic bundle. They have 28 million homes. 

Netflix is not a substitute for HBO as it lacks recent movies, not to mention 
all of the exclusive HBO shows. And neither has the content in the extended 
basic bundle.

So you can go on with your "not yet" mantra, just as you did with HDTV, and 
by the time you notice the change, it will have become old news!

the plug on TV service altogether, preferring to simply focus on Internet and 
phone service.

The large MSOs are not dropping TV to increase broadband. 

You seem to miss that the same content, delivered over IP, would make at 
least as much money.

Yes and no. The content people really want will still make money. But people do 
not want to pay for a bunch of channels they do not watch - not my words, 
that's what Les says. 

Much of the content people do not want to pay for fills the far too numerous 
rerun channels. But people ARE paying Netflix to watch this stuff.

For now, unfortunately, the extended basic bundle is hanging in there. When the 
content owners finally decide to allow meaningful bundles to be sold via the 
Internet things will change. as Les says:

This will happen...someday.

You seem to think that just because content delivered to luddites, the 
old-fashioned way, moving on the 21st century solutions would collapse that 
market.

You keep telling us that the MVPD market is collapsing. Yet more than 80% of 
U.S. homes are still subscribe. 

The reality is that a small percentage of homes are cutting the cord. When 
viable options do become available via the Internet there "may" be a major 
shift. Then again, the incumbents can just offer more affordable bundles.

You just said that the content in question will still make at least as much 
money if delivered via the Internet. You cannot have it both ways.

Actually you can. Some people will switch to bundles delivered OTT. some will 
remain with the incumbents. Markets will adjust, but they will not collapse.

Is Verizon your wireline telco provider or AT&T?

If Verizon and Cox are my only two choices, how can you think that AT&T is 
another choice? I have said multiple times that Verizon provides our 
neighborhood with DSL, BUT NO LONGER OFFERS IT to new subscribers, and won't 
fix it if it breaks. Verizon wants all of us to migrate to FiOS. And the only 
other (cabled) choice is Cox.

So Verizon sells wireline phone service in your neighborhood AND they offer 
FIOS services in your neighborhood. Thus you have two choices for high speed 
broadband - Cox and Verizon. And you have five choices for MVPD bundles - Cox, 
Verizon, Dish, DirecTV and Sling TV.
