...with maybe a happy ending.
I don't even know how to ask the question so I don't know what group to
turn to. I'm hoping one of the more technically savvy or IT related
folks on the list can point me in the right direction.

Short Story

A neighbor, quite unexpectedly, received a "missing or corrupt
NTOSKRNL.exe" error - no symptoms, no changes to the computer, nothing.
Thinking it was a virus, she ran Symantec AV from a floppy, no virus
found. She attempted running the rescue disk that came with the system
but unsuccessful.

I installed the HD into a working system and can see directories and
files. The only files I can't see are those that would be related to a
user, such as My Documents.

Is there any way to unlock these files? In lieu of that, is there
someone to whom we can send the HD to have the files recovered.

Long Story

The neighbor is actually a dear friend of my Mother's. A couple of years
ago, she was diagnosed with a debilitating illness forcing her to move
into a care facility. She is mentally alert and has use of her hands. At
about the same time, her family had to move to another state. As a
moving gift, they bought her a nice HP (Windows XP Home) computer and
had all family photos and memorabilia put in, including scanned images
from the Civil War. She has been busily creating a family history book
which includes pictures, grave rubbings, birth, death and marriage
certificates, report cards, etc. And she's making a family quilt for
each of her children. It's been coming along nicely. In the meantime,
as a result of the move, the family placed many boxes not immediately
needed into storage. The storage facility was damaged by flood meaning
the family has lost all the family memorabilia. The only remaining
copies were on this computer.

Any ideas about how to recover would be greatly appreciated.
